Just a humorous look backwards...

While reducing my stacks of old periodicals (to make room for new stacks, I
guess), I ran across this from NEWS 3X/400, June 1991, Street Talk:

"A variation of the printed hype is the roving Rochester mavens who speak to
user groups and IBM seminars. The common tactic they use to entice AS/400 users
is to give the audience juicy behind-the-scenes tidbits about what's running at
Rochester's labs: AS/400 quadradic processors, AIX on the AS/400, C++ on the
AS/400, and so on. None of this is commercially available, or likely to be
commercially available on the AS/400 in our lifetime, mind you, so the message
seems to be, 'See, we _could_ make the AS/400 work like other minis _if we
wanted to_.'"

One needn't look too far into the future to find unfamiliar landscapes. 1991 is
very far away in our industry, but I'm glad it didn't get far enough into the
past that it's outside of our lifetimes.
