jt:

(I was going to reply this to the list, but thought it would be more appropriate private).

I've got to jump in here and give Scott the plus on this one.

jt, I was trying to follow your line of thought in this discussion, and it did seem to jump around too much to follow easily.

Scott has a habit of expounding in a detailed, logical, well-thought manner. Your thoughts come out sometimes kind of scatter-shot, even considering the e-mail format, though "scatter-shot" does not equate to invalid, neither do the arguments.

But there is also a shrill quality to them. Your tendency to try to alliterate voice conversation (""they'sALLUS an exception to thuh rule") does not result in the intended projection, whatever it is, just reflects the attempt, adds real effort to reading it, and in the process really detracts from the intellectual content of your arguments.

Take a page from one unnamed other in the lists (dont' guess, you'd never hit it, just it's not Scott). He has a weakness toward arrogance, but he almost never lets it show, even to himself, and what comes across is usually simply the points he is making, the breadth of his abilities, and his intelligence. (Not an endorsement of any particular views).

By the way, I believe in the principle of Open Source, but not blindly, and if you go back over Scott's comments, you'll find that he is also well-balanced on the subject, and he is definitely not a Stallman type advocating that all code be immediately open-sourced.
