Scott, Can't reply, at length, until later. However, this is FALSE, get over it: | -----Original Message----- | [mailto:midrange-nontech-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Scott Klement | Sent: Thursday, April 08, 2004 1:28 AM | Open source is the process of people helping each other out by letting | someone use your learn from your code, and use your code in their | systems. They then return the favor by improving your code, or adding | features to it and contributing those back to you. Surely you can see | how that's similar to these mailing lists? Yeah, I do. And I noticed it's not only similar, but IDENTICAL to what I did to learn programming 20-some years ago. Legally, without ripping off anybody, without trying to cripple companies that sell software to make a living.. ..And without any pseudo-philosophy-bullcrap-lies.. which is the core of "Open" Source Movement, btw. (That's one-a the primary reasons I do NOT care for movements, btw.) How do you explain this?? How was it POSSIBLE for me to do exactly what you say Open Source does, with commercial software 20 or 30 years ago?? How is it EVERY shop I've been in (except my first job when I was in a 1-man shop) has done exactly this, what you CLAIM is the GREAT ADVANTAGE of Open Source?? (And actually DID do this in the first job, come to think of it.) And thanks for making my point that Open Source is nothing more than a marketing gimmick, (have any-a you actually READ the OSI and GNU sites, with a modicum of logical discrimination??.. the OSI SPECIFICALLY STATES that it is a MARKETING EFFORT, right??? ??? ??? ???) intended to end commercial software development. It may seem like a "new" thing to those who have limited experience, but it ain't. Just another con game.
