Tom, Just to be clear :-) - it was NOT an issue of connecting the 7208. That had been done and it worked on BOTH systems. And as I stated, since the tapes were radically different in density (and the 7208 documentation said to ONLY use that higher density media in it) I had not considered that it might actually read it OK, not damage it, etc. So I really DID try to figure this out on my own but sometimes you just don't see the forest for the trees :-) Chuck -----Original Message----- From: midrange-nontech-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:midrange-nontech-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Tom Liotta Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2004 6:09 PM To: midrange-nontech@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: TEXT file doubt midrange-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: > 8. RE: TEXT file doubt (michaelr_41@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx) > >My post wasn't sarcastic. If folks on this list don't want to answer >newbie questions, maybe we can have another list. If we can't, we can't. Where it gets difficult is determining which questions are 'newbie' and which aren't. For example, there might be a significant number of programmers out there who have no clear idea what [FMTDTA] is meant to be. It sure doesn't bring to mind the concept of "sort" right off the bat and it certainly isn't considered current technology regardless of how well it works. You _almost_ have to be a dinosaur just to know it exists. OTOH, when a tape conversion question can essentially be answered with "Did you try connecting the 7208 and see if it works directly?", nobody thinks in terms of "Duh! That's so obvious." Which of the two questions ought to be relegated to a new list? And once a new list exists, will it then be polite to say "Off topic! Get thee to Midrange_Newbie!" rather than answer?
