~~~What's gonna be fun is when someone decides to exploit a
~~~major "centrally managed and self-updating" anti-virus
~~~solution. Of course, such software _never_ has bugs. (And
~~~yes, all my AV stuff is auto-update, etc. Sigh.)

Yes, probably will be accidentally released from a classroom during a test
or lab practical and they would immediately wish they could undo it because
it is a particular nasty one.
I can't for the life of me figure out why they release these things and they
don't do much more than clog up pipes.
Maybe when the AV stock needs a bump up it would pay to have a university
connection to virus writing students?

Not that I want it, but it makes better sense to do more in the way of
statements of purpose or targeted damage.
Of course, I have not digested all this info on these worms/viruses.

You guys were pretty quick to respond about the AV being centrally managed
or axe the IT guys.
I can see your point. OTOH, home users are not the ones making the news on
each virus version, it is corporate users and big government agencies like
DMV's.
My opinion is that it's not that they have poor IT its that the protection
stinks. Beyond their control in many instances, be it political or logistic
reasons not to mention core AV functionality.

I find it a stretch to believe that an organization with 100 PC's that has
done everything by the book still does not waste gobs of time on AV or is
taking a risk unknowingly, assuming they are protected. But I am keeping an
open mind that with reasonable effort it is being done today by folks
everywhere. Locked/ bypassed files is just one thing I've noticed that makes
me a skeptic.

At my home office (my only office) 'I' need to check 4 PC's which I think is
typical these days for an out-of-the-home worker.
and home workers are basically on their own unless they hire expertise, I am
sure there are many exceptions to this.
My PCs are typical, 1 for work, one for testing, one for spouse, one for
kids.
The kids obviously being the most important to check so his does not gobble
up another PC. Keep work on separate IP, yada yada....
AV is not my forte, but don't want to get the axe, I learn something new
everyday to make life less cumbersome in this PC world.

After years on my particular ISP who offers top notch service, they are
starting to close ports and my inbound mail has slowed to a crawl.
