And you know what, John?  Another difference between you and me is that I
look at what happened to McCarthy, to Hoover, to Nixon.  What their legacy
is, and what ultimately they did to our country, and to our freedoms as
Americans.

Ultimately, not a damned thing.  Because the Constitution is a powerful
idea, and Liberty is a jealous old lady, and the American people, when time
demands it of them, can rise up at the oddest of moments and squash even the
greatest of evil.

Why do you think that those conspirators that DO exist, do it behind walls
and in the dark?  Why do you think they buy bad men and hurt good ones?  Why
do you think they skulk from one crime to the next, sure in their power yet
afraid to come out in the light of honesty?

Because Democracy is a scary thing, John.  It often grazes like a fat, happy
cow ready for the slaughter, yet somehow when the heat is on it grows some
pretty serious horns and balls to go with 'em, and it becomes one
belligerent bull.

You know what?  Some skulkers are gonna make some money out of this war if
it happens.  And some innocent people will die.  But if in the end the
American people think it is wrong, we will stop it.  We will find out.  We
will take back what is ours.

Ask Nixon.

And some of us aren't as hyoung as you think, and are far less naive than
you think, John.  Some of us have lived through horrors that we couldn't
even begin to explain to you.

And yet, some of us have seen that even in the darkest of nights, the
brightness of the human soul shines through.  Right will out, though
sometimes it is in death, and in the end, each of us will get exactly what
we deserve, because remember - nobody gets out of this alive.

People en masse can be stupid and uncaring, especially when they have
nothing to fear.  But individuals, acting in the interests of others,
somehow always rise to the occasion.  Maybe you don't believe that.
