Oh yes, Microsoft DOES understand. This is precisely the problem. MS wants to dominate, they already dominate the OS. The way to more domination is to pull things into the OS. This is called "integration". IBM does the same thing with the AS/400. There is no competing database (Oracle and Co.) on the AS/400, because the database is "part of the OS", and so on with all the other things that come integrated with the AS/400. I recall an interview with Bill Gates about 10 years ago, where he said that MS was working on increasing their marketshare, and that "he could see no reason that that marketshare shouldn't be 100%".
