Funny thing is... other operating systems (i.e., *nix) has a plug-in based... well.... everything. From the kernel to the UI. Microsoft just doesn't seem to understand that an OS is the part that makes the computer a computer, all the other stuff is software and therefore should be optional. Linux would not be able to be installed on a 386 if you had to install KDE or Gnome, or run on a floppy disk, like it can now. -----Original Message----- From: Richard B Baird [mailto:rbaird@esourceconsulting.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 05, 2002 12:22 PM To: midrange-nontech@midrange.com Subject: Re: Ballmer on software design.... that's a classic and a keeper. the funny thing is, ever since the anti-trust thing started up, MS has used all of it's resources to make SURE future versions of windows wouldn't run without IE - anyone remember the mocked-up-bogus screen shots of '98-sans-IE they displayed as 'evidence' to the integration of IE into the os, during the anti-trust trial? what a crock ---original message--- "That's the way good software gets designed. So if you pull out a piece it won't run." Steve Ballmer.
