It depends on how Red Hat ships their product. Some distributions lock down the box "out of the box," others leave security wide open and then let you lock it down. I know Caldera is locked down "out of the box." I would guess if IBM distributes it, they will make sure that it is locked down also. Speaking of Linux on the iSeries, I was at an IBM class last week for the WDT. They talked about security and a good example for the use of Linux. Create 5 partitions 2 for Linux, and three OS/400. The layout would look something like this: OS400 | Linux | OS400 | OS400 | Linux Core programs | Firewall | Webservers | Webservers | Firewall Core DB | | Application | Application | | | Servers | Servers | | | --------- Load Balanced --------------| NIC to OS400 NIC to Linux Internal Network Internet Connection Seems like a cool idea. It would eliminate a couple different ways for hackers to hit the core system since it is all one machine. -----Original Message----- From: Brad Jensen [mailto:brad@elstore.com] Sent: Friday, December 21, 2001 2:43 PM To: midrange-nontech@midrange.com Subject: Re: [e-com-sec] e mail viruses "Wills, Mike N. Yes there are many holes that Crackers (NOTE: > Hackers just find the holes and get them fixed. I wonder if the same problems exist on the IBM port. I think we were using Red Hat on the PC. -- Brad Jensen brad@elstore.com President Electronic Storage Corporation Tulsa OK USA 918-664-7276 LaserVault Report Retrieval & Data Mining www.Laservault.com www.eufrates.com - Add distance learning to your site with easy course preparation _______________________________________________ This is the Non-Technical Discussion about the AS400 / iSeries (Midrange-NonTech) mailing list To post a message email: Midrange-NonTech@midrange.com To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/midrange-nontech or email: Midrange-NonTech-request@midrange.com Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-nontech.
