I recall from the Media in Review from Forbes that Canada media is generally left of US ... what I am seeing indicates that when it comes to protection against terrorism, Canadians are more willing to sacrifice Constitutional guarantees than Americans. Other folks may be interested in these Forbes Critical Review of Print Media 1-800-825-0061 ... basically they list the top 500 or so most influencial journalists in America, with a publication for the work of a year at a time. What were the big stories of that year, which media got the story right, and which were led astray. Forbes took this publication over from an earlier outfit that had features I liked but are now gone. There were lists of major publications & TV in USA and Canada, with reviews of how they compared to each other in quality of coverage. The journalists get rated with codes meaning such things as A byline not to be trusted Barely meets criteria, seldom offers anything new Barely competent Above-Average reorting and delivers skillful arguements Provocative well informed, unquestionably fiar, with sharp insight Exceptional approaching the very best Perhaps we need a rating system like this for web sites When you call to order a recent Media Guide, they will try to sell you on subscribing to their MediaCritic but I tried it for a year & found it to be very dim compared to the publications put out by the various schools of Journalism. In other words when it comes to Journalists & would-be Journalists critically evaluating their profession's competence & fairness & etc. we get much better coverage from academia standards than from another outfit in the same biz. I never did find their web page, but I was watching the Canadian Broadcasting Service, via C-Span, & one Canadian said Canadian blood has bought freedom through NATO & Canada should continue to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Apparently the Prime Minister of Canada will soon be traveling to the USA to renew support for the US fight against terrorism. I imagine that in the aftermath of that visit, there will be a clearer message about what the Canadian government plans to do, that will satisfy the Canadian press. http://www.nationalpost.com/ The Canadian National Post On Line has several interesting stories I guess Iran has no formal diplomatic relations with the USA, but does with Canada. Iran has sent a message to George Bush in care of Canada's Prime Minister, declaring that they are not opposed to US military action in their region against terrorists. The message also asks that the scope of US action be targeted at the terrorists, Iran not approving of any wider scope military action. Another story talks about a federal jury in White Plains, a suburb of New York which has issued warrants for the arrest of material witnesses to details of the plot. Some of these people are cooperating & some are not. http://www.fyiedmonton.com/htdocs/edmsun.shtml The Edmunton Sun has a front page story that seems to editorialize that the Prime Minister is failing to spell out details his people are looking for. However, it appears like this is the first time that Canada has formaly declared war on terrorism. Apparently the opposition party is on the top leadership's case to be more supportive of America than has already been stated, and to be more vigorous about protecting Canadian infrastructure from terrorist threats. http://www.canoe.ca/CalgarySun/editorial.html Editorial Pages of Calgary Sun show unhappiness with Canadian Government not being forthcoming about what their leadership is going to do about a clear and present danger. This newspaper included an American flag to help Canadians show their support. http://www.globeandmail.ca/servlet/RTGAMArticleHTMLTemplate/C/20010919/wxbord? hub=homeBN&tf=tgam/realtime/fullstory.html&cf=tgam/realtime/config-neutral&vg= BigAdVariableGenerator&slug=wxbord&date=20010919&archive=RTGAM&site=Front&ad_p age_name=breakingnews Toronto Globe & Mail has a bunch of stories I had not seen in the US media. Air Canada is suffering in the impact on the economy Israel is backing away from some actions at the request of George W Bush There's a story about what profiling is happening on the Canadian Border, which I tried to forward directly because it seems relevant to recent discussions & possibly of interest because our technical skills parallel the folks being apprehended. The head of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce was arrested for making a joke about the bombing that was considered to be in bad taste. Ooh, Canadian law on being politically correct must be stricter than in the USA ... the only way such a person might be arrested here would be to protect the idiot from mob action.
