OK Chris.

You've restricted the term "operating system" to a small subset of the
functionality of even Unix and DOS.  Society has obviously been grossly
abusing the term for years.  What term do you suggest we use to collectively
refer to "things" such as VMS, Unix, DOS, Linux, MPE, or Windows now that we
understand that none of them are operating systems?

I wonder if Prince is still using that funny symbol of his.

Short answer, no. However, what you refer to as spool management includes
both the software (application level) front end which no doubt accesses the
operating system which is responsible for allowing access to hardware. The
integrated file system will no doubt also make a lot of calls to the OS. The
TCP/IP stack is mostly a broker between applications (local and remote) but
it will of course be managed by the OS which is responsible for providing a
means for communication between tasks.
