Keep in mind these email to text services are being phased out.

Why? I should think that if anything, there *ought* to be a unified email-to-text portal that covers *all* cell phone providers. There's certainly no technological reason why not. If there were, then I probably wouldn't be getting so many spam-texts. (While making it generally known that I don't tolerate spam-texts has slowed last year's torrent to a trickle, that doesn't change the fact that there was a torrential flood of them.)

What I don't get is why does it have to be a text? My phone beeps when I get an email as well as a text. :)

Not everybody has a full-on smartphone. Or wants one. Or is prepared to tolerate having one foisted upon them. And not everybody has an email provider with which their phone is on speaking terms. I, for one, have a clamshell, and while it *does* have an email reader, that email reader won't talk to the email provider that I've had for over a decade, so I have to use my phone's *very rudimentary* web browser to access my personal email provider's web-mail interface.
