Checking whether database monitor is running or not

We're doing some monitoring of database connections. The process works well except for when we IPL the system to apply PTFs, etc.-i.e., the system shuts down and stops the DB monitor. The system IPLs and the monitor is no longer running.

Is there a way I can check to see if the monitor is running or is my only option to include a STRDBMON command in the QSTRUPPGM routine?
