The problem is that it seems impossible to access the ASMI interface using
any method we have tried.

Did you try to access ASMI via the serial port and simple VT100 capable terminal emulator? This is how I did the initial configuration and verification of IP parameters.

The client has used the buttons on the control panel to find the IP-address
for HMC-1. This address was different from the default in the documents
IBM-support has provided.

Either they have changed, or are assigned via DHCP from a centralized device.

Using that a laptop has been connected with an ethernet cable to the HMC-1 port. Following this the ip address has been entered in a browser (tried both https and http) as described in documents.

Before trying to use a browser, better use a command line and try to ping the address. Modern browser error messages can be misleading.

If you connect the cable directly, you disconnect the link. Most clients will then invalidate their IP address being assigned by DHCP. Then you connect your notebook. This has no DHCP server. ASMI is unable to get a valid IP address and you are not able to connect. Better connect your notebook into the same network segment as ASMI is connected.

:wq! PoC
