I second Thomas Burrows' thought. UPSes aren't really expensive nowadays. And if someone wants to avoid investing cost for old systems, get used ones and NoName replacement battery packs from eBay and reassemble yourself.

Bigger companies here often have very large UPS, protecting the complete local server room.

For years, I have on my ToDo-List to derive the pinout of classic AS/400 UPS port from publicly available adapter pinouts. If anyone has a pointer to a readymade pinout, I'm all ears!
