I have worked on S/36 to AS400s through IBM i, very satisfied with the way they havve supported backward compatibility, even when they sunsetted some functionality that was little-used. You could say I have championed the system, even once asking why should we mess around with "inferior" operating systems.

No comes new IBM leadership that is messing around with inferior practices, and charging extra for the trouble.

So I go back to my prediction from long ago, that IBM i would be overtaken by open source solutions. Already Tomcat, and SQL are ubiquitous in the midrange space. Communications layers are free and open.

Sorry, IBM. It's true that Open Source in applications will have a much slower uptake across all IT. Especially if IT leadership starts to degenerate into too much confidence in AI to write applications and algorithms. Better to let 3rd graders do it. Remember "Are You Smarter than a Third Grader?

Get smart, people! Remember GIGO! And don't lecture us about how AI knows garbage from real world. :)

I'd be on all 7.6 now if
1 - All the software vendors supported it.
2 - I could buy a P05 model of a Power 11.
