This may be one of those cases where it might be better to move sooner than
later. Get information straight from IBM and not any rumour mill about
subscription pricing and Power 11. Especially, is subscription pricing
required now, or will it be a few months? That may be critical to you.

And, if you are staying somewhat current anyway, and not running obsolete
hardware and OS versions, is subscription pricing such a bad thing?

Yep, full manifestation of the "impedence mismatch" between what was
always a thin client server centric model vs distributed fat clients.Not
solvable elegantly and efficiently in IBMi if one insists on fat clients.
Common in use fat clients IDEs bring some benefit in other environments
because for example you can test code locally, run a test suite in a
simulated VM etc.
In IBMi , you are always connected, no matter what, require a central
online machine to work.IMHO the only real IDE (SEU) replacement in IBMi
should be something installed centrally, PTFed with the other
components.And one would connect via web (thin terminal) to work (in
absence of a real thin graphic protocol). Syntax checkes, string search in
million lines code bases, AI assistance, db browsing, all done simply
server side, with the proper security checks and hardware accelerators.
There are some decent web based IDE in another environments (i.e. full
cloud), pretty workable.You are at a customer, you have linux on your
laptop and you want to connect to edit a source? done in a second. Mac,
easy. Old win7 with an updated browser, no prob.I know that they propose
now a "Merlin" thing (never used to be honest), but the IMHO the thing to
be of any success should be easy to install and start, like a PTF group,
not having to deal with an openstack monster just to run an editor.

regarding the OS versions, I'm still on V7R4 and I own the machines.I
would have jumped in a second to power11 and V7R6, but the mandatory
subscription thing, out of a now trite broadc0m playbook, plus the EOLing
of some tooling, let me backtrack a little to investigate some details
better. I guess full enthusiasm to doubt (fully auto induced by IBM
deciders not tech per se).
