192.254.x.y are addresses your Windows client dynamically assigns itself
when it fails to obtain an IP address via DHCP server.
All I get is a delay of five or so seconds and then a message that thepage
cannot be loaded.
I tried other 169.254* addresses with the same result.
Yes. Because for sure, the machine's ASMI address is not something
192.254.x.y. And it has no DHCP server to assign an address to your windows
client.
In my simple world it would seem as if I am using the wrong address
You are correct.
but since there is no documentation on site about any IP address changes(saw
that the IP can be changed) how on earth shall I proceed?
Well, first, do not attach your client directly to the HMC port. Use a
switchport in the same Vlan for your client, leave the HMC port connected
to where it was, and the network infrastructure should give you an
appropriate IP address for your client. With that, you should be able to
connect to ASMI via browser, if the client's documentation is correct.
You can also connect via serial port to ASMI, and use a VT100 compatible
terminal emulator to page through the menus and check the IP configuration.
Serial parameters AFAIR are 9600 bps, N-8-1.
