You need the File Description File (.FDFX) to describe the data in the CSV
columns...

If it helps, consider uploading a fix-width file, how would the system know
where the columns are? The answer is, from the FDFX.

While CSV provides a column length definition, it doesn't say anything
about the type of data. So you still need an FDFX to transfer to a DB
Table.

You can create one manually, but you can also use the data transfer wizard
and it will scan your PC file and guess at the columns/types. Which are
then presented for you to fine tune and save to an FDFX.

In the data transfer window, select Actions-->Create IBM i Database file
(Ctrl-D)

Hello,

It's about time I got to the bottom of this. I'm in France and the only way
I can get a file from my PC to the IFS is with the IFS navigator open and
then uploading my file. I can't get the data transfer facility to work
because I don't understand it. Why would I need a file description file in
order to create a new file from a CSV file? How can I create one when the
file does not exist on the i?
Back to the IFS upload facility, there my problem is that characters with
French accents are wrong in the resulting IFS file. I suspect that the
CCSID is the problem. I'm seeing 850 and I think I need 1252. How do I
configure the CCSID used by the IFS upload manager? Why is it creating an
object with CCSID 850?

Thanks
