As I see it there is more than one objective in this IBM initiative.

As far as RPG II is concerned I would like to see two main objectives.

1) Explain existing code and (potentially) suggest the modifications needed to achieve a maintenance objective.

2) Facilitate converting the program to modern maintainable RPG code. This latter is way more difficult since the S/36 programs will be using multi-format flat files. In the past there have been tools to assist in this process but there are few actively marketed. AI opens the possible for a better/simpler conversion.

As far as RPG III and onward are concerned

1) Document and explain code
2) Write new routines
3) Convert "old" code to modern RPG
4) Identify reusable routines

As I understand it the AI will be trained utilize existing IBM code, open-source code, and code from contributing companies and individuals. Volunteers will be recruited to assist IBM in training the model and helping to learn what is good and bad RPG.

I personally am keenly looking forward to seeing what emerges from this.

I don't think IBM is trying to get AI to generate RPG II code. This raises the issue of what is the content being used to train the AI app. This is based on a very brief presentation other than what all these folks saw.

Buck,

"One might say this is obscure, but who among us will be asking ChatGPT
to explain Z-ADD?"

Ask it to explain primary and secondary files with matching records and
level breaks. I'm curious on that response. ;-)
