Yes there are truly exceptions to the rule about debugging on production.
On the payroll system first in use when I started they had to do the
founder off system. Apparently that system didn't have enough digits.
I've also heard about someone who had a payroll system on S/36. For the
executive payroll run the data was restored from diskette, the process was
ran, the data saved again and then deleted with the S/36 option to put
binary zeros over the deleted data. Air gapped system.
Us, who have to deal with such problems, may understand the need for such
debugging. However auditors have their valid concerns and we need to work
together.
