Patrik, I completely agree with your statement that "...short names are the least of ""our"" problems" - the original poster wants long names for things like user profile names, just as we have now for database objects - I have to ask, just how often do we handle non-database objects in our programs, whether RPG or even CL?

So where can be use longer names now?
1. SQL names can be used in RPG IV (or call it RPGLE)
2. Long procedure names exported from service programs can be used in CL (CALLPRC) and RPG

That covers a lot of usage, seems to me.

But you're right... let's reinvent all of the string handling in all of the programming languages on the system and make everyone completely rewrite all of their programs. That'd work much better.
