There's some truth to what you say, esteemed Champion Rob, but when you get
down to brass tacks, you're already in before you get the message.
Once you're in, NAMEFMT 0 will tell you that it's either IBM i or IBM z/VM.
So I think you may be overly fastidious in this regard.
The concern about OS type is perhaps more relevant in a User Agent (web
browser) which identifies itself when you visit a web page.
Some browsers nowadays you can turn that off.
