FWIW

On the STRUP prgramm we activate several watchs(STRWCH) that watch for
20-somthing
messages(events) we deem important .
when tripped, a simple RPG program is called and sends SMS/EMAIL to a pre
defined
list of people .(defined by the massage and the time of day)
We originally developed it to watch for nightly batch jobs that "bombed"
but it has since grown to other areas (like Power/UPS issues)

Typically when there's a hardware problem a message gets sent to the
QSYSOPR message queue.
Monitoring software like Absolute Performance's System Shepherd watches
message queues and alerts on this sort of thing.
There are also open source monitoring packages that have been applied with
some success to IBM i.
IBM's Jesse Gorzinski and friends are currently crafting a new open source
solution called Manzan <https://github.com/ThePrez/Manzan>.
