First, Welcome to the list!

Sorry you disconnected yourself by clobbering the connection! I do suspect however that you didn't actually delete it, you merely disabled it. The reason I say this is that it's not possible to delete an IP interface that is active or an Ethernet line description that is active.

Your TCP/IP configuration lives in IBM i, not in the Licensed Internal Code (LIC).

As a consequence your IPL to the "A" side merely re-activated TCP/IP and you were able to get back in. So if you IPL back to "B" with PWRDWNSYS *IMMED RESTART(*YES) IPLSRC(B) you'll have connectivity back as well, and be back on the "B" side.

A short lesson in "A" vs "B". Those are two copies of the LIC. This is not IBM i itself, only the internal code. The "A" side contains only LIC PTFs (Program Temporary Fixes) that are Permanently applied. LIC PTFs are those that start with the letters 'MF'. The "B" side contains everything from "A" and also contains any Temporarily applied LIC PTFs. The intent of the two copies is two fold.

One, if you have an issue with a temporarily applied LIC PTF you can IPL back to the "A" side to troubleshoot or to remote the PTF in question.

Two, if you damage one copy of the LIC, for example by applying too many fixes at once, you can IPL to the other copy. Repairing this would likely require you to 'Slip the LIC" which is replacing the damaged LIC with a new copy of the LIC from tape or DVD.

Hope that helps!

Hi all,

This is my first post on this list, and I just wanted to say that I'm extremely new to AS/400, I just started out of curiosity for the system and its architecture.

I recently got an AS/400 9406-170 with V4R2 installed. The system came with no installation disks, terminal or cables, but I was able to start in IPL Type B and connect to it over ethernet cable from a virtual terminal.
Unfortunately, while playing around with the TCP/IP settings, I accidentally deleted the TCP interface configuration, of course the connection immediately dropped and I was left without a way to connect to the system.
After some digging I was suggested to load into IPL type A, and that actually worked: the system loaded with the TCP configuration still there.

Now for my question: is it possible to somehow apply the TCP/IP configuration from Type A to Type B? If not, is it an issue if I keep working from Type A for the time being?

Thank you and please correct me if I said something that doesn't make sense. Everything is new to me, and I'm struggling to even find the right terminology to make proper google searches. Thanks!
