You are using "https://api.mapbox <https://api.mapbox/>..." - note httpS - there's always certificates involved when you do that.

I seem to recall that when switching from the old Java-based methods to the new C-based ones we did have to import the certs that were part of the underlying Java package but not included with the C stuff. Tried to find the message thread where I got help but can't track it right now.
