Well, that's true for other platforms, also. A char was once a byte in the range 0..255 and some people agreed that some of these bytes have special meanings which has been formalized as ASCII code. You do know that. :-)
The "norm" for most open source is LF ( 0x0a)

Many programs will accept CR-LF (0x0d 0x0a)
Mh, guesswork again. I hoped that IBM being known for firmly setting "standards" would have defined this.

I know of none that will treat just CR (0x0d) the way the OP wanted.
I think so. As far as I'm aware, the only *platform* using just CR was the Macintosh prior to the advent of OS X.
