ssh would complain about that.

If that's the problem, go in thru ssh then:

*chmod go-rwx .*
*chmod go-rwx .ssh*
*cd .ssh*
*chmod go-rwx authorized_keys*

Only the private key files are to be protected with mode 600, everything else is accepted by ssh(d) being world readable.
