If you prompt DLTPTF the first parameter is optional but you can tell it to
select *PRMAPY to only get those permanently applied.
The real question is: Will DLTPTF delete the backup save files? For
example, if I apply ptf SI12345 temporarily and ptf SI12345 is a fix to the
program QCMDEXC then it may copy the old version of QCMDEXC to a backup
save file of QSI12345V1. If I do a RMVPTF then the old version of QCMDEXC
gets restored. If I do a perm apply of SI12345 then QSI12345V1 gets
deleted. So, I don't think DLTPTF gets rid of those backup files. I think
only permanently applying them does. Which is a MAJOR reason to
permanently apply all ptfs and IPL prior to any OS upgrade or they'll stay
around forever.
Note: I'm not sure IBM uses the backup save files any more. I'm starting
to think the backups are stored elsewhere

But, Jeff, as far as UPDPTFINF goes, see Q40 at
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ptfs-faqs-question-and-answers
Basically it helps with PTF's at different releases too and not just people
with multiple systems.
I just ran this:
select *
from table(qsys2.object_statistics(
OBJECT_SCHEMA => '*ALL',
OBJTYPELIST => '*FILE'))
where OBJATTRIBUTE = 'SAVF';
Apparently you should also do a WRKPTFGRP and blast those right before an
upgrade as I have some old stuff like the following:
QSF99702G from several years ago

In these steps:
APYPTF LICPGM(*ALL) APY(*PERM) DELAYED(*YES)
UPDPTFINF
DLTPTF PTF(*ALL)
If you have only a single LPAR, you would just skip the UPDPTFINF, right?
And don't you want an IPL before the DLTPTF command?
Just being anal-retentive. :)

Ok, it's important to remember there is a difference between RMVPTF and
DLTPTF.
RMVPTF will remove a ptf that is temporarily applied.
DLTPTF will trash the save files, cover letters and all the stuff you
longer need.files
Another command to know is UPDPTFINF. This basically takes ptf save
you may have copied from one system to another and registers them intothe
ptf system.
So what I do every quarterly maintenance is the following:
If I have no test ptfs currently applied I first run:
APYPTF LICPGM(*ALL) APY(*PERM) DELAYED(*YES) UPDPTFINF DLTPTF
PTF(*ALL)

Does anyone have a best practice for managing PTF Save Files? Should
they be saved? Is it best to delete them once they have been
permanently applied? Or is there a defined process on how they
