A lot of people are trying to escape from 2E for a number of reasons - not the least of which being that CA are just using it as a cash cow and constantly jacking up the cost without adding any value. Others I have worked with cite lack of upgrades and poor support.

There is also an underlying potential problem in that the product is built on PL/I which IBM have not really supported for well over 20 years now. So far IBM have found a way to keep the compiler and its run-time creaking along. They were incensed to because of a number of high-level clients ( including CA and US Steel ) used the product. But many (most?) of those have now moved away from PL/I and as far as I know 2E is the only significant product still based on it. Making sure the PL/I compiler and apps keep running costs IBM $s with each major release. Now that there are good convertors to move PL/I and 2E code forward, one of these days they are going to decide that the cost is not justified and to let it die.

Given the annual $s that 2E costs - in my opinion - sticking with it is foolish when there are good alternatives that can move your application base forwards beyond the 1980s.

So is everyone switching to web base screens ? For system control files edits/displays ?

I can build all the displays and edits in 15 minutes with CA 2E for green screen..

We use CNX's Nitro App Builder for a number of maintenance and ad-hoc reporting tasks. Great tool with excellent support. (https://www.cnxcorp.com/valence-software/low-code-app-builder <https://www.cnxcorp.com/valence-software/low-code-app-builder>)

I also recommend PHP Grid as a great tool for this kind of CRUD development and at a very low cost (https://phpgrid.com/ <https://phpgrid.com/>),

We are looking to stop using CA 2e and convert all the source to rpgle free via ARCAD. But would like a product to help create maintenance programs for our control files and we still use Green Screen for that.

I see PeoGen Plus but that is 10 years old.

Any hints ?

Thanks
