X . windodos is very alive in the Linux Unix world. I am using it in
opensuse.

I think that is entirely depended on the application software. For
instance there is an application for hotels that present screens much like
we might expect in IBM i, there is also a GUI for it. In think the one I’m
referring to runs on AIX. The user never sees the command line.

Another thought I had about this. Does a typical "user" get the
scrolling screen when using a Unix screen? Or are they plopped into some
GUI or other such thing which focuses on their job duties? For example,
does an order entry clerk typically get a scrolling screen and then types
in 'enter order' or some such thing?
Or are scrolling screens more the domain of administrators? I think of
them like the open system version of CALL QCMD

Subject: Message of the day at 5250 signon

Hello,

UNIX systems may have a file /etc/motd with a short text for showing
more or less important information to users on logon time. This usually
scrolls out of view quickly in a classic „scrolling“ shell environment. An
example would be an announcement about an upcoming maintenance downtime.

I‘m wondering if there is a similar function for 5250 sessions on IBM i,
or especially it‘s ancestors.

I understand that the message line text shown at signon time is
statically defined in the menu panel group and just once more a copyright
reminder by IBM.

I guess, to achieve my goal, I might end up coding a full-fledged main
menu myself with the necessary routines to read a message of the day from
somewhere and show it in the message line.

Any thoughts about this? Is there an easier way?

Thanks!
