Everyone has smart phones now. What's the difference between getting an
alert for a text or an email? Do people just ignore email alerts?

SMS is immediate ... email may not be.

On my iPhone I can configure the email polling to happen every 15, 30,
60 minutes or manually.

Texts are pushed from the telco.

Seems like a phone setting issue to me. I've always gotten immediate email
alerts (android). Email alerts are easily set up to be push notifications
as well (at least on more recent OS versions of android or ios).

I know if I knew important emails could come through I would be sure to set
those notifications properly.

Maybe people just think texts are "cooler" than email. :)

Either way, if text alerts is what you want, a service is what you need.
