Well, another way I'm exploiting (not for IBM i, though) is a Cisco 1100 series Router we're primarily using for VPN backup via LTE — in case the main internet connection goes down. You can configure the router to log in via ssh, with key and not password auth. And simply send an SMS via command line:

ssh myuser@myrouter "Cellular 0/2/0 lte sms send [number] [up to 160 chars of text]"

Then again, there is zero reason why IBM i could not do the same thing as well. We have one of those routers as well, but I never thought to do that with it.
