Text messages are sent via a cell phone network -- so in order to send
them DIRECTLY, your IBM i would need cell phone service as well as the
appropriate hardware to be connected to the cell phone network.
The alternatives that most people use are (1) Email gateways, which
you've already mentioned, and (2) various APIs on the Internet that you
can call from your program, and they handle the interfacing with the
cell phone network.
