You can use a putty client to connect to IBM i. I've not done it but here is a document on how to do it.

I hear some people recommend it over STRQSH or CALL QP2TERM for pase type stuff.

There are some little rules, like your userid must be 8 characters or less. This is one reason why we have this corporate standard throughout Windows, etc.

One of the above links did mention V5R4 or above so keep that in mind when doing your testing. I know you have an affinity for the ancient.
