Jim,
I can tell you that you can do whatever you want with the machine without a
current UAK. I have several P8s with expired UAKs and the worst I have is
the constant nagging SRC. I can reset them to factory, build new
configurations, VIOS, LPAR, PowerVC, etc. I have not tested upgrading the
FSP FW, but that is the only supposed limitation. The UAK is pretty aptly
named "Update Access Key" it is only meant to prevent access to updates not
entitled to the machine.

That's my understanding, however it has been said that no updates to FSP,
indeed any changes to configuration could be made without a current UAK.
I've never verified either of those restrictions, rather doing my utmost to
stay current with IBM SWMA and Hardware support. Most of my customers do
as well, although the move away from IBM hardware support is gaining
momentum.

True. "Toast" was a bit extreme.
Does this mean, though, that you CAN upgrade your firmware, as long as
you
only upgrade to stuff put out before your UAK expired?

That is correct Rob but you're not toast as you can keep going with
your
existing UAK

What I see here Gad is that even if one found a ftp site at IBM with
firmware at it you'd be toast as the UAK would not allow you to install
anything newer than the expiration date of your UAK.
