'$1' means put the contents of capture group 1 in that place.

The other thing is that what you may need is to remove the characters, so
you should put a caret character before a set l[A-za-z]'.

Caret '^' means anchor at the beginning ... so that would require the characters be at the start of the contents being evaluated.

The expression Steve posted should replace any upper or lower case alphabetic characters with nothing.
