No. They probably changed it because it's difficult and they don't want to tackle it.
This is a big issue. We have at least 3 applications on our IBM i that has the ability to send email messages, but only via SMTP. And we're a very small shop.
We use O365 as of last year... By default, no new O365 accounts (as of a year ago) allow SMTP - it's a security risk. We had to configure one email address so that it has the ability to authenticate in a different manner.
