Both variables are initialized with NULL, adding or concatenating something
to a NULL value results in a NULL value.
And a NULL value cannot compared directly with another NULL value
If you define a DEFAULT Value in your DECLARE, there is no need anymore to
initialize these variables separately.
DECLARE WORK_YEAR INT Default 0;
DECLARE BREAK_YEAR INT Default 0;

I fixed this by adding these two lines before the loop started.
SET WORK_YEAR=0;
SET BREAK_YEAR=0;
I suspect that even though the debugger showed WORK_YEAR=2014 and
BREAK_YEAR=0 it may have been confused about BREAK_YEAR since it had never
been assigned a value.

I have these lines as part of a Stored Procedure

DECLARE WORK_YEAR INT;
DECLARE BREAK_YEAR INT;
...
IF WORK_YEAR > BREAK_YEAR then ...
SET BREAK_YEAR = WORK_YEAR;
END IF; -- Control break on year I am running this in the
system debugger.
I see that work_year=2014 and break_year=0 yet it jumps from the if to the
end if.
Why is that?
