Kind of weird, huh?
Can you give the above code?

Let me try to simplify an earlier email.
I have these lines as part of a Stored Procedure
...
DECLARE WORK_YEAR INT;
DECLARE BREAK_YEAR INT;
...
IF WORK_YEAR > BREAK_YEAR then
...
SET BREAK_YEAR = WORK_YEAR;
END IF; -- Control break on year
I am running this in the system debugger.
I see that work_year=2014 and break_year=0 yet it jumps from the if to
the end if.
Why is that?
