Okay, then I remembered that one wrong. At least, like I said, all my claims stem from memory. ;-)

But in either case, it is not adhered to in actual command displays. If the prompt is 29 characters (i.e. the text ends at column 30) you get one dot, which is all there is room for.

Interesting. IBM seems to no longer adhere to their own standards consistently. :-)

I appreciate your response. Now I know that neither the implementation nor the documentation matches what I consider to be the most sensible behavior.
