One of the HMC's we have in our installation is a virtual one running on
VMware. As those who use vHMC's probably know this was this installed from
an image from IBM that created a Linux based appliance that that ( for us)
runs on our VMware farm.

I asked our infrastructure team if they could back up the HMC VM for us in
case the host server or the SAN failed and was told while they can ping the
server, VMware cannot see this appliance internally so it is not able to
use its normal backup processes. I think that includes the HMC not having
VMTools installed on it.

Since the HMC doesn't change that much, and the console configuration can
be backed up separately I am suggesting we could use backup the VMDK every
now and then. Not getting positive feedback to this idea as it would be non
standard so I am interested what other shops are doing to backup their
vHMC's

Thanks
