The mft is IBM i based. However it uses it's own cipher suites totally independent of the OS. I suspect you could run it on 7.1 and have valid cipher suites.
The MFT is multiplatform.

I do like your explanation of why IBM omits the prefix and uses the asterisk.

I will try using both SSL and TLS at ciphersuite to see if that makes a difference. But I really do suspect that a SSL prefix generally denotes an obsolete cipher.
The package I use has both SSL* and TLS* ciphers.
