What is the point of a virtual serial number? So they can match it with a
previous system they had? What's next, virtual model numbers? Virtual
logical serial numbers?
The main usage is related to LPM (Live Partition Migration) and SRR (Simplified Remote Restart). They both allow a partition to move from a server to another one, without any disruption for LPM and in case of a server failure for SRR. With virtual serial number, the impact on software keys based on serial number should be lower and maybe no more existing. At least, for IBM products there will be no impact, as you must have software keys linked to the VSN.
