I want to expand my documentation collection (ibmdocs.pocnet.net) with BOOK files I have collected over time. This equals to nearly 1500 files in 1.2 GB of data.
I found out that the old InfoSeeker for OS/400 has a function to display a screen of metadata when using option 8 from the list of books:
Display Description
Book title . . . . . . . . . . : Graphical Data Display Manager: GDDM Base Ap
plication Programming Guide
Book name . . . . . . . . . . : ADMA1A01
Document number . . . . . . . : SC33-0867-00
Date published . . . . . . . . : April 23, 1993
Date built . . . . . . . . . . : 23.04.93
Author . . . . . . . . . . . . :
Document name . . . . . . . . : /QDLS/QBKBOOKS/SORT/ADMA1A01.BOO
Now I'm wondering which options I have to extract that metadata.
You can't put in option 8, and prompt with F4 for OUTPUT(*PRINT). Invalid function key.
Any idea how to pull out this information from 1475 files automatically? Client-side macros, perhaps? I have looked at iACS. It supports recording and playing Macros. I can easily telnet from a newer machine to my 150 to exploit the iACS facilities. A test run succeeded so far that I have the screen content in my clipboard. Next step would be to automate pasting the content into text document, and save it with an arbitrary file name.
From there I can use my Linux Toolbox to process the data further.
Any other recommendations? I don't care if the process itself runs slow, as long as I don't need to do it manually, and invest a lot of time to develop the process: It's something I need to do just once.
I also can create a user profile on request for people being interested in trying out different ways of achieving that goal, or wanting to collaborate to expand the said documents collection.
Thanks!
