Thanks to you and everyone else that responded.  I believe we are getting to the root of the issue.   We were informed this morning a new FTP server was installed the day the send broke.  A rather important detail that was not shared.  We also found out that same day load balancing was installed.
We are scheduling a meeting with the network group.

Could you paste the ftp log when it works in manual mode?
Please include all commands you use just after you get the logged on
return from the server. Something like that:

steps which run fine in manual case and fail in automatic case.

The ids are the same the ports the same.   I really think it is on the network side.
