Since the OP wasn't very detailed about which characters he's wary of, and which language he's using, some there might be different approaches.
expand - convert tabs to spaces -

As far as I've experienced myself, REXX is very sensitive to wrong line endings, eventhough the file looks good in SEU. Can't recall how RPGLE behaves. I have read about people colorizing their RPG source by hand in SEU by inserting the appropriate 5250 sequences. If the compiler doesn't complain over such "garbage", I bet it's forgiving in many ways.
