LEFT looks similar to the LOCATE idea I had, but I'd guess LEFT would
perform better.

Ah yes, escape doesn't really help here, but maybe you don't need a LIKE
at all, would this work?

declare global temporary table TABLE_1 as (
select * from(values('0110 EXFN 01 ABCD')) x(COL1)
) with data with replace
