Mac ODBC Driver uses unixODBC.

I don't think it needs Java.

Just install the Mac package.

Maybe I?m way off base here. But if you can ssh to the IBM i and they have installed the tn5250 from the rpm repository that handles one part. The is also a Mac application for ODBC that I do think requires Java that can be downloaded from IBM
