Often times the save file is for a V7R3 or V7R4 box and saved at that level. This is my distribution machine that customers use to download various items. Often it's software I've created for them and such.

To the best of my knowledge there is not a format change for save files, in face I've been able to restore V4 items from save files.

Why can't you read them? Because they weren't saved with the right TGTRLS? Or is there really a format change?

namefmt 1
bin
put mysavf.savf mynewsavf.savf
quit

The save file mysavf.savf will be copied into a new save file called mynewsavf.savf on the target machine. "get", "mget", and "mput" all work the same way.

Be sure to be careful about releases. For instance I happily keep lots of save files created for V7R3 and V7R4 on my V7R2 (lowest common denominator) system, I just cant read them on that system.

I did not read this on an IBM web page, but when researching I read that when you FTP a file and the file does not exist at its destination, it creates a flat file at the destination (which I experienced). The only way to prevent this is for the file to exist at the destination. I know I can use a save file, and create the destination save file in my FTP script, but I run into problems with different release levels saving the file. This process runs on multiple machines.
To add another fly to the ointment, the file is not consistent for the different machines. Some have an extra field. So I have to manually save to a save file and FTP for each machine, then restore that file to the destination machine in its custom library. I cannot just copy a generic file from the destination machine to each custom library.
